Do you need to register your business?

Sole traders

As a sole trader you don’t need to register your company with Companies House.

But you will need to register with HMRC for tax purposes.

Limited companies

As a limited company you’ll need to register with Companies House to get a Certificate of Incorporation and a unique Company Registration Number (CRN). Registering costs £50*.

Limited companies also need to file annual accounts and a confirmation statement with Companies House and register with HMRC for Corporation Tax.

How much does it cost to register a limited company in the UK?

The standard fee for online registration of a limited company with Companies House is currently £50. Do I pay the registration fee to HMRC?

No, the fee for the initial registration of your limited company is paid directly to Companies House, the UK's registrar of companies. The information you provide during this registration is then shared with HMRC.

What information do I need to register my limited company?

You'll typically need to provide details such as your company name, registered office address, information about the directors and shareholders, details of your company's shares, and information about the people with significant control (PSCs). You'll also need to agree to the company's memorandum and articles of association.
